How to obtain an H1B visa / work permit

Quick Facts about the H1B Visa Program:
• valid for 6 years - can also go on to obtain a Green Card and US Citizenship.

 • spouse and children (under 21) get an H4 visa to live in the USA with you.
 • can change employers / jobs by ‘transferring’ an H1B visa to a new sponsor.

• it's the primary work visa for highly skilled/educated professionals and graduates.

 • H1B workers must be paid the same as US Citizens for the job performed.

 • there is a fixed quota of H1B visas each year, which creates a high level of demand for H1B workers in the USA (and also some competition to get one).


Do You Qualify for an H1B Visa?

• must have a Bachelors degree or higher degree (or Foreign equivalent) - OR

• at least 12 years work experience - OR

 • a mix of education and work (e.g. 2 year College diploma + 6 years work)


 • must work in what is considered to be a “specialty occupation”
