New H1B Visas - a Bigger Quota and Better Immigration System

The Immigration Reform Bill has now  passed the Senate Judiciary committee

On June 27, 2013 the Senate approved S.744, The Border Security, Economic Opportunity, and Immigration Modernization Act of 2013, by a vote of 68 to 32. The comprehensive immigration reform bill received all 54 of the Democrat’s votes and 14 of the Republican’s votes.

This great news for all International professionals and students
around the world, and for Masters students who want to work in the USA. 

There are many aspects of the immigration bill, which have been passed. Here is summary related to H1B Visas, Green cards and a new Startup Visa.

    » The annual number of available H1B Visas will be increased from 65,000 per year to 110,000 per year, and potentially up to a maximum of 180,000 per year dependent on market demand.

LUS, the advanced degree H1B cap for Masters degree holders from US schools, will be increased from 20,000 to 25,000 H1B visas.

    » Stricter rules on H1B Visa applications and approvals for companies that already have about 15% of their workforce on H1B visas.

    » No
limits on Green Cards for individuals with extraordinary abilities, especially research fellows, Professors, MNC executives, athletes.

    » New: StartUp visa to help encourage foreign entrepreneurs to start businesses in USA.

    » New: 120,000 up to 250,000 merit based visas to immigrate to USA. There will be a points system for this new visa that will be based on a number of factors including but not limited to education credentials, employment history, skills, etc.

    » The 55,000 diversity visa lottery program (Green card Lottery) that is currently used today will be removed to cater to needs of employment and merit based visas.
